How can SIFF strengthen its international influence and enable more film deals?

This consultancy project asked how SIFF could build on its position as China’s only A-category international film festival to strengthen international industry influence and facilitate more film transactions. We examined positioning, international buyers’ and sellers’ needs, and the services connecting attendance with concrete collaboration.

EIGHT RECOMMENDATIONS

Combine Shanghai’s film heritage, festival standing, international business services and local audiences into a specific market-entry proposition, explaining what practical support international sellers can obtain.

Tell the market story through transaction evidence

以匹配结果、后续发行和合作案例说明市场价值,形成“From SIFF to the Chinese Market”的持续传播。

Publish bilingual annual transaction reports, case-study films and a clearly defined recognition list. Use matching outcomes, releases and partnerships to sustain a “From SIFF to the Chinese Market” narrative.

Connect the stages of dealmaking

Collect buyer preferences, budgets, territories and audiences alongside seller stages, markets and screening availability. Combine AI-assisted matching with human review and participant consent, then connect scheduled meetings, private screenings and three-month follow-up.

Create a bilingual China-market handbook

Work with specialist partners on market structure, regional audiences, release periods, acquisition and import processes, and local service providers. Verify time-sensitive prices and requirements rather than presenting broad guarantees.

Link international funding with incubation

Explore development, post-production and distribution support for emerging-market projects alongside the existing Chinese-language focus. Link support to market presentation so projects have a continuous pathway rather than isolated awards.

Reduce distribution risk

Explore marketing support for films acquired through SIFF, with sponsorship and agreed recycling of returns from successful releases. The aim is to lower buyer risk; eligibility, recoupment and governance would need a separate design.

Provide dedicated market screenings

Separate commercial screenings from public exhibition, offering accredited buyers a professional private setting and exploring online access. Ensure that viewing can lead promptly to discussion and negotiation.

08 · International Village
Build a distinct international village

Distinguish national and regional representation from commercial company stands. Combine pavilions, shared meeting areas and social spaces to connect policy presentations and project discussions with actionable cross-border partnerships.

Product: guides and buyer screenings. Process: demand, matching, meetings, viewing and follow-up. Position: gateway to China. Paradigm: an active B2B matchmaking service rather than only an exhibition host. These are the report’s innovation 4Ps, not the marketing mix.

SWOT: translating diagnosis into action

Strengths: festival standing, city resources, audiences and existing industry platforms. Weaknesses: limited structured matching and follow-up, and an unclear international proposition. Opportunities: market entry and co-production. Threats: competing Asian markets, changing buyer interest and uncertainty around access. These findings inform the eight recommendations.

PROJECT NOTE

How can a film market turn a meeting into collaboration?

In the SIFF consultancy project, I kept returning to how participants could find relevant counterparts within limited time and have a reason to continue the conversation.

Markets already offer meetings, stands and business cards. Effective matching is harder. International sellers need to understand local distribution, release windows, audiences and services. Buyers need to assess whether films fit their channels and territories. Without structured information, an encounter can remain a polite introduction.

Our proposal began before the event: collect buyer preferences and seller information about genre, project stage and target markets. Matching and scheduled appointments could then turn chance encounters into prepared conversations. Buyer screenings would support further assessment, and post-market follow-up would connect the event to subsequent outcomes.

The value is not technology alone. Positioning, understandable information tools, professional viewing contexts and follow-up answer different uncertainties along the participant journey.

For B2B planning, attendance and activity are only part of the picture. A useful service makes the next step easier: finding a counterpart, assessing value, building trust and continuing toward collaboration.
